Women and Addiction: Assessment, Treatment, and Recovery

Substance use and issues associated with addiction continue to increase in prevalence among women. In this two-hour continuing education web conference, Dr. Dennis will discuss the etiology of addiction in women and why the appeal of certain prescription medications, illicit drugs, and alcohol is growing. For example, as many as 25% of women in the United States today take some type of prescription psychiatric medication and this trend may be serving to escalate the incidence of addiction to prescription medication among females.
Dr. Dennis will review the standard definition of addiction, discuss its prevalence, and discuss the unique obstacles that women face when seeking treatment and sobriety. Dr. Dennis will also review contemporary methods for assessing substance and process addictions while sharing her experience as to which treatment interventions are most effective in practice.
This introductory, instructional level web conference is designed to help clinicians:
- Describe the difference between substance induced disorders and substance use disorders.
- Explain the etiology of substance and process addictions.
- Discuss how the effects of addiction impact women's relationships and mental health.
- Predict barriers and obstacles to women seeking help for addiction.
- Recognize assessment tools and treatment options for addiction and co-occurring issues.

Meet the Presenter
Kim Dennis, MD
Kimberly Dennis, MD, is a board-certified psychiatrist and the CEO/Medical Director Emeritus of Timberline Knolls, a residential treatment center for women experiencing eating disorders and addiction, where she is involved with the development of clinical programs.
Specializing in addiction recovery and the treatment of trauma/posttraumatic stress and co-occurring conditions, Dr. Dennis takes a holistic approach to psychiatry, incorporating psycho-social, biological, and spiritual modalities and theories into treatment.
She has worked and published extensively in the fields of eating disorders recovery and treatment. During her psychiatric residency at the University of Chicago Hospitals, she served on an eating disorders treatment team and also conducted clinical research with the head of the eating disorders program.
A frequent contributor to professional journals such as Behavioral Healthcare, news networks such as ABC News and CNN, and newspapers such as Chicago Tribune and the Boston Globe, Dr. Dennis also serves on the editorial board of Eating Disorders: The Journal of Treatment and Prevention. In addition, she writes a monthly column for Dailystrength.org, an online support group network, and has been featured in two documentaries about eating disorders and on the television show “My Strange Addiction.”
Dr. Dennis serves on the medical advisory board for the National Association of Anorexia Nervosa and Associated Disorders, of which she was a founding member, and is a member of several other organizations, including the American Psychiatric Association. She resides in Illinois.
