The Cost of Caring: Vicarious Trauma and Mental Health Professionals

Presented by Rebecca Kase, LCSW, RYT on 09-10-2020 at 9 a.m. Pacific (noon Eastern) to 11 a.m. Pacific (2 p.m. Eastern)

Vicarious trauma is a professional liability for counselors and therapists. Immersing yourself day in and day out in the suffering of others can take a toll physically, emotionally, and spiritually. Not only can caring impact clinicians personally, it can also seep into their work with clients and impact their professional efficacy. Therefore, learning to manage vicarious trauma is not only an intervention for the counselor, but also an intervention for work with clients.

Join Rebecca Kase, licensed clinical social worker, registered yoga instructor, and nationally-known professional trainer, for a 2-hour continuing education webinar dedicated to vicarious trauma. Rebecca will lead attendees in exploring the physiology of vicarious trauma, developing awareness of the impact of it, and better understanding how vicarious trauma can impact client outcomes. She will conduct an in-depth review of self-care for behavioral health professionals that goes beyond what a typical vicarious trauma training may teach.

This introductory instructional level web conference is designed to help clinicians:

  1. Create a definition for what vicarious trauma is and why it matters.
  2. Discuss the role of empathy as it relates to experiences of vicarious trauma.
  3. Explain how vicarious trauma can impact client outcomes.
  4. Identify at least three symptoms of vicarious trauma.
  5. Develop a framework for planning strategies to manage and cope with vicarious trauma.

Statement of program material's accuracy, utility, and risks: This program presents a clinical innovation that combines neuroscience, mindfulness, and concepts from the knowledge base on vicarious trauma and clinician burnout. It is consistent with the ethics code of the American Psychological Association and also has its own established code of ethics as developed by the Association of Comprehensive Psychology, an approved CE Sponsor of the APA.

Declaration of conflicts of interest and commercial support: None.
