The Therapeutic 'Aha!': 10 Strategies for Getting Your Clients Unstuck

Presented by Courtney Armstrong, LPC, MHSP on 11-06-2015 at 9 a.m. Pacific to 11 a.m. Pacific (2 p.m. Eastern)

It is a perennial challenge for therapists to be effective with clients, particularly when therapy gets stuck or stalled. Drawing on new insights from brain science, this presentation delivers 10 practical, creative strategies you can use with people who are "stuck" to clear internal conflicts, elicit motivation, and engage clients more fully in the change process.

More specifically, you’ll discover that the key to triggering “Aha!” moments is to spark a person's emotional brain, which learns through felt experiences, not rational discussion. Learn how you can craft such transformational, felt experiences in your sessions as Courtney Armstrong shares new spins on interventions that utilize attunement, metaphor, imagery, storytelling, humor, play, music, and movement.

Clinicians who attend this web conference will come away with 10 simple, powerful techniques that can be put to use immediately to:

  • Dissolve resistance for people who seem guarded or unmotivated.
  • Evoke intrinsic motivation and confidence for people who feel worthless, helpless, or hopeless.
  • Locate and resolve internal conflicts for people who feel ambivalent about change.
  • Stop people from getting hijacked by their emotions and clear the root of recurring patterns.
  • Relieve your own sense of frustration, boredom, or “stuckness,” and feel more energized in your sessions.

This intermediate, instructional level web conference is designed to help clinicians:

  1. Classify areas of the prefrontal cortex and the emotional brain that are involved in integrating emotion and reason.
  2. Identify one key communication strategy that fosters attunement, strengthens the therapeutic alliance, and diffuses resistance.
  3. Use the emerging understanding of memory reconsolidation to design interventions with more transformational impact.
  4. Describe at least two ways to utilize imagery, music, playfulness, or movement to regulate emotions and elicit intrinsic motivation.
