Testing Basics: How Neuropsychological Assessment Can Help Therapy Clients

Presented by Jeremy Sharp, PhD on 04-09-2021 at 9 a.m. Pacific (noon Eastern) to 11 a.m. Pacific (2 p.m. Eastern)

As a practicing therapist or counselor, have you ever asked yourself after a therapy session, “What is going on with this client?” You are not alone! People are complex, and therapists and counselors can only get so much understanding from spending an hour a week with someone. Enter neuropsychological testing.

Neuropsychological testing and assessment can be a helpful way to gain information about a person’s cognitive and emotional functioning, and it can transform the therapeutic process. Unfortunately, this valuable service is often hard to navigate for both clients and their clinicians.

In this 2-hour continuing education webinar, Dr. Jeremy Sharp will walk participants through the key concepts a therapist needs to know about psychological assessment. Dr. Sharp will outline the benefits, common outcomes, and applications of neuropsychological testing as follows:

  • What: what is assessment, exactly? What does it look like in practice? What does it cost? What are common outcomes of testing?
  • When: when should therapists or counselors refer a client for an assessment? When can you expect results from the assessment?
  • Who: who can perform an assessment? Who can benefit from an assessment?
  • How: how do you “sell” testing to your clients? How can you interpret and apply assessment results to help your clients?

This introductory continuing education webinar is designed to help mental health clinicians:

  1. Define neuropsychological testing.
  2. Identify three types of therapy clients who can benefit from a neuropsychological assessment.
  3. List three common diagnoses that result from neuropsychological testing.
  4. Describe three common positive outcomes from assessments.
  5. Summarize how to best learn from and apply assessment results in your therapeutic work.
