True Refuge: Meditations That Serve Emotional Healing and Spiritual Freedom

Presented by Tara Brach, PhD on 02-15-2013 at 9 a.m. Pacific to 10:30 a.m. Pacific (1:30 p.m. Eastern)

A basic tenet in Buddhist psychology is that our suffering arises out of a mistaken sense of who (or what) we are. Perhaps the most pervasive expression of this suffering is the perception that we are personally deficient or unworthy. The pathway to healing and freedom includes the cultivation of mindfulness and compassion—attentional trainings that loosen our limiting sense of identity. As we bring these facets of a meditative attention to habitual patterns of fear and shame, we discover what is called our “true refuge,” the timeless and loving space of our own awakened nature.

During this presentation Dr. Brach will explore how our attempts at finding security and love often further separate us from true refuge and how the different components of meditation can serve to carry us home. This presentation will include didactic presentation and guided reflections.

This web conference is intermediate instructional level and designed to help clinicians:

  1. List basic principles of Buddhist Psychology;
  2. Explain the core components of mindfulness and compassion meditation;
  3. Examine the role and mediating mechanisms of meditation practices in healing emotional suffering;
  4. Utilize Buddhist mindfulness and compassion practices in addressing fear and shame.
