Safe Conversations: From Conflict to Connection

Presented by Harville Hendrix, PhD and Helen LaKelly Hunt, PhD on 06-17-2016 at 9 a.m. Pacific (noon Eastern) to 11 a.m. Pacific (2 p.m. Eastern)

Talking is among the most dangerous things people do, and listening is the most infrequent, and thus the source of conflict that needs a solution. Through the practice of "Safe Conversations," a structured dialogue process, Harville Hendrix, PhD and Helen LaKelly Hunt, PhD aim to help people, in all human ecosystems, experience safety in all conversations in the service of creating a relational world, shifting the perspective from the age of the individual to the age of relationship—by helping people build healthy relationships.

In this two-hour web conference, participants will learn this new way to talk that makes conversation safe and achieves connection, and they will be introduced to the new relationship and brain science that supports it. Helen and Harville co-created Imago Relationship Theory and Therapy over 25 years ago and today is practiced by over 1,200 Imago therapists in 37 countries. The process is proven effective with couples and families as well as corporations, congregations, and schools.

How we interact with each other is the key to our emotional, physical and economic health. By teaching a process that facilitates relational change, Helen and Harville aim to establish healthy relationship as this society’s primary cultural value which will lead to greater civil conversation and foster a legacy of stability and peace for generations to come.

This introductory instructional level course is designed to help clinicians:

  1. Describe the Safe Conversations model.
  2. Describe Imago Relationship Theory and Therapy.
  3. Examine the neuroscience principles of the Safe Conversations model.
  4. Practice the strategies outlined in the Safe Conversation process.
  5. List the Safe Conversations principles.

Event Reviews from Members

Years of wisdom and experience of presenters - BRAVO. - Janet Brodsky, LICSW

I've been familiar with Hendrix work for years but have never seen him speak. Nor have I seen Hunt. It was wonderful to meet two such self-effacing and brilliant folks who shared so freely. - Suzanne A. Holmes, EdD, LPC

Amazingly insightful and relevant. I think that listening to them both cleared up some confusion I had after reading the book Getting the Love You Want. - Clifford Jacobson, LMFT

I enjoyed the layout that offered a ground up approach of Imago. I was not very familiar with it and they did a good job describing the basics and building on it. - Rebecca Frank, MA, LPCC, NCC

Meet the Presenter

Harville Hendrix, PhD and Helen LaKelly Hunt, PhD

Harville Hendrix, PhD and Helen LaKelly Hunt, PhD

Harville Hendrix, PhD and Helen LaKelly Hunt, PhD believe that how we interact with each other, in all our contexts—family, workplace, schools, etc.—is the key to our emotional, physical, and economic well being and to the well being of our children and society. They envision the possibility of shifting from the age of the individual to the age of relationship; when “relationship" rather than the “individual" will be the primary value system of culture.

To make relational information and skills available to everyone, they co-initiated:

  • Imago Relationships International, a training institute for couples therapists.
  • Relationships First, a collaborative mission to change the cultural value system.
  • Family Wellness Dallas/Safe Conversations®, an experiment to raise the joy index of a whole city.

Dr. Hendrix and Dr. Hunt continue to co-create Imago Relationship Theory and Therapy and make it available in workshops, training programs, lectures, seminars, and books. Currently over 1,200 Imago therapists practice in 37 countries.

Dr. Hendrix is a couple’s therapist with over 40 years experience as an educator, clinical trainer and lecturer whose work has been on Oprah 18 times. In addition to Dr. Hunt’s partnership with her husband in the co-creation of Imago, she is sole author of Faith and Feminism. She was installed in the Women’s Hall of Fame for her leadership in the global women’s movement. Helen and Harville have been married for over 30 years, have six children, and reside in Dallas, Texas.

Dr. Hunt's and Dr. Hendrix's professional partnership has produced 10 books including three New York Time's best sellers:

  • Getting the Love You Want
  • Keeping the Love You Find
  • Giving the Love that Heals

Their latest book is Making Marriage Simple (2013). They are currently working on a new professional text on Imago theory and therapy.
