Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy: The Compassionate, Pioneering Cognitive Psychotherapy

Presented by Dr. Debbie Joffe Ellis, MDAM, LMHC on 11-19-2020 at 11:30 a.m. Pacific (2:30 p.m. Eastern) to 1:30 p.m. Pacific (4:30 p.m. Eastern)

Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT), created by Dr. Albert Ellis--who is recognized as one of most influential psychologists of all time--changed the world of psychotherapy. Evidence-based, scientific, no-nonsense, effective, and empowering, REBT is also imbued with compassion. In addition to being a unique therapeutic approach that has inspired and influenced many approaches that followed it, it can also be a way of life for those who choose to apply it as such. REBT provides "how-to's" for minimizing emotional disturbance in order to create a meaningful life that brings enrichment and greater joy, and it also encourages individuals to contribute to the well being of other people and the world around them. It is known as one of the most holistic approaches in the field of psychotherapy.

Dr. Debbie Joffe Ellis was entrusted by her late husband, Dr. Albert Ellis, to continue his work, and does so with dedication, passion, and humor--making it relevant for the current times. In this 2-hour continuing education webinar, Dr. Joffe Ellis will share the basic principles, philosophy, and therapeutic techniques of REBT. She will talk about the REBT recommendations and descriptions of ways of successfully coping during times of challenge and crisis. She will also answer attendees' questions about REBT theory and practices.

This introductory web conference is designed to help clinicians:

  1. Outline the basic principles of Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT).
  2. Describe the differences between rational and irrational thinking.
  3. Explain the differences between healthy and unhealthy negative emotions.
  4. List the main cognitive, emotive, and behavioral techniques in REBT.
  5. Describe the pivotal aspects of an effective REBT therapist.

Statement of program material's accuracy, utility, and risks: This program presents the evidence-based pioneering approach of Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy. It is consistent with the ethics code of the American Psychological Association (APA) which has published books on this approach and produced a video REBT training program for professionals. This program includes strategies for applying the methods taught in a clinically responsible manner, which according to reliable research can be highly effective for achieving therapeutic goals. However, as can be the case with all psychotherapeutic approaches, misapplication of REBT's psychotherapeutic interventions with some mentally and emotionally vulnerable individuals may have little or no benefit.

Declaration identifying any potential conflict of interest and/or commercial support: None.
