My Approach to Helping

Life can be a lot to handle sometimes. In the blink of an eye, things can happen that irrevocably change our lives. Events like a cancer diagnosis, the death of a loved one, job loss, a breakup, sexual assault, or even a car accident may leave you with trauma, anxiety, depression, and grief that degrades your health and quality of life. Often, it is many accumulating events that overwhelm us with chronic stress and push us past our current ability to cope. If you are in that place where hope, happiness, and the life you would like to live seems impossible to reach, I can help.

I know from first hand experience that we, as human beings, are more resilient than we recognize on our own. Even if it doesn\'t feel like it right now, you have the strength to move forward & overcome whatever is holding you back & pulling you down. I became a counselor to help people persevere and recognize their own strength, even during the hardest times.

Whether it is a traumatic event or an accumulation of everyday stressors negatively affecting you, I\'m here to help empower you to overcome barriers holding you back from a better life. My approach is to individualize care for each client & walk alongside you to build the life you want to live by helping you set goals, make changes, cope, & build resiliency.

This is a practice designed for women just like you. Women who feel overwhelmed and beaten down, but who are stronger and more resilient than they know. When we are in pain and are bogged down with responsibility it can be difficult to see the light at the end of the tunnel. It can be even harder to see our own strengths and self worth.

HerTime is a place to take time for yourself, where you'll be reacquainted with your strengths and the value you bring to this world and your relationships. It is a place to put yourself first, because you are worth it. You deserve the time to heal, find your strength, and develop a pathway forward to your ideal life.

At HerTime, you'll work individually with a female therapist using integrative counseling techniques. This means that your treatment plan will be unique based on your needs and will incorporate a variety of evidenced based counseling methodologies and complementary medicine, such as nutritional coaching and referrals for somatic treatments like massage or acupuncture.

Your therapist at HerTime that will act as your partner, offering the compassion, guidance, and perspective needed to set and achieve goals designed to give you control over your life and wellbeing.

How My Own Struggles Made Me a Better Therapist

A Bit About Me . . .

I became a holistic, client centered mental health therapist because I know what it is like to have your life turned upside down. Early in my professional career as an English teacher, one of my worst fears came true - my mother was diagnosed with terminal cancer. My perspective on life and my priorities shifted suddenly and irrevocably. I spent three wonderful and terrible years at her side as a cancer caregiver before she passed away.

During that time and the years following, I learned how to manage chronic stress, grief, and anxiety, while also finding the bright spots in life and a way forward. I've lived with anxiety and even navigated the stress of starting and changing career paths during a time of mental, emotional, and physical upheaval. The blessing in these experiences is the clarity I gained around my true purpose and passion in life - to teach other women how persevere through their darkest moments. ?

I'm ready to be your partner in facing anxiety, grief, and traumatic stress, not only because of the qualifications listed on this page, but because I've been there. I've lived through it, and I know you can too.

Importance of the Client-Therapist Alliance

When you enter counseling, you are entering a collaborative relationship with a trained professional. In sessions, your counselor partners with you to help identify goals and solutions to the problems causing distress in your life.

My View on the Nature of 'Disorders'

HerTime is a feminist practice, which means that clients experiences and level of distress is evaluated with societal, cultural, and political causes in mind. In other words, the challenges and stressors that women (and men) face as a result of bias, stereotyping, oppression, and discrimination based on gender is central to identifying appropriate therapeutic interventions and solutions. In feminist mental health care, the voices, ways of knowing, and experiences of women and girls are honored and clinical diagnosis is avoided. A primary goal of feminist informed therapy is strengthening women in areas such as assertiveness, communication, relationships, and self-esteem. This is achieved through a egalitarian client-therapist relationship that is characterized by validation, advocacy, psychoeducation, care, and support. Often, a formal "diagnosis" isn't warranted because your distress is a natural and normal response to systematic oppression and your environment!

The Duration and Frequency of Therapy

The frequency of therapy is mutually agreed upon by you and your therapist. How often sessions occur will be based on your presenting issues and goals. In most cases, it is best to begin counseling by meeting weekly and gradually increase the time between sessions as your level of distress is lowered and your goals are being achieved. Groups usually meet weekly or bi weekly, though this may also vary. It is important to be on-time for your scheduled appointments and to meet with your therapist consistently in order to make progress on your mental health journey. If for some reason you are unable to make it to your scheduled session, please call or text 720-255-1667, preferably 24-hours ahead.
