#MeToo-Informed Therapy: Helping Men Wake Up and Women Speak Up

Presented by David Wexler, PhD on 06-25-2021 at 9 a.m. Pacific (noon Eastern) to 11 a.m. Pacific (2 p.m. Eastern)

The rise of the #MeToo movement has generated a seismic shift in how we view sexual harassment and other at-times-overlooked issues in the relationships between men and women.

In this 2-hour continuing education webinar for mental health clinicians, Dr. David Wexler will explore ways to distinguish and address transgressions that range from violence to bullying to gross or juvenile acts. Dr. Wexler will focus on strategies clinicians can use to help men who offend or are confused, as well as offer strength-based strategies to help women confront sexual misconduct in personal, academic, and professional settings. There will be a special emphasis on couples whose relationship and sexual dynamics have been impacted by #MeToo histories, with strategies for effective couples counseling that help each partner understand how #MeToo issues may be undermining their relationship.

Drawing from his new book--#MeToo-informed Therapy: Counseling Approaches for Men, Women, and Couples written with co-author Dr. Holly Sweet--Dr. Wexler will guide clinicians in how to help men realize the causes and consequences of their behavior and how to make “real” apologies for sexual misconduct they have engaged in. Dr. Wexler will outline clear strategies for confronting male entitlement in a way that actually gets through to men, helping men examine ways in which they may have unknowingly “crossed the line” with women, intensifying empathy for the confusion and paralysis that many survivors of sexual harassment experience, and helping couples form more meaningful empathy and alliances about issues of sex, gender, and power.

This introductory continuing education web conference is designed to help mental health clinicians:

  1. Develop clear strategies for confronting male entitlement in a way that actually gets through to men.
  2. Explain how to help men examine ways in which they may have unknowingly “crossed the line” with women in their lives.
  3. Identify the confusion and paralysis that many survivors of sexual harassment experience to assess how best to help them heal and move forward.
  4. Describe strategies to help bridge the gap in couples when histories of sexual harassment and sexual assault are affecting their relationship.
  5. Explain how to help couples examine gender roles and expectations to improve clinical outcomes.
