Loss and Grief: Modern Theory and Tools for Intervention

This continuing education webinar for mental health professionals will explore the biopsychosocial process of grief and bereavement following a loss and will include discussions of disenfranchised grief and complicated grief.  

In this 2-hour webinar, Tami Micsky, DSW, LSW, CT will examine modern theories of grief and loss including:

  • the task-oriented framework
  • constructivist approaches 
  • continuing bonds perspective
  • the dual-process model
  • a strengths-based approach
  • family systems theory

These modern perspectives will allow participants to explore and design practical, customized interventions for individuals, families, and groups who have experienced a variety of forms of loss.

Micsky will conclude the webinar with a discussion of compassion fatigue and self-care strategies for direct-care professionals and will take questions during Q&A periods.

This introductory continuing education webinar is designed to help postgraduate clinicians:

  1. Analyze the biopsychosocial process of grief and bereavement following a loss.
  2. Explain disenfranchised grief, including the unique challenges for grieving individuals.
  3. Describe complicated grief and contemplate the challenges associated with a formal diagnosis related to grief.
  4. Examine and apply modern theories of loss, grief, and bereavement, including the task oriented framework, constructivist approaches, continuing bonds perspective, the dual process model, a strengths-based approach, and family systems theory.
  5. Use modern theories of grief combined with an understanding of instrumental and intuitive styles of grieving to design practical, customized interventions for individuals, families, and groups who have experienced loss.
  6. Evaluate personal risk for compassion fatigue and implement appropriate self-care strategies.

Statement of the program material’s accuracy, utility, and risks: Given the nature of the course topic, it is possible that participants’ personal grief experiences may be triggered leading to an emotional reaction. Participants who experience a reaction should reach out to their personal and professional network for support. References for course material will be provided.

Meet the Presenter

Tami Micsky, DSW, LSW, CT

Tami Micsky, DSW, LSW, CT

Tami Micsky, DSW, LSW, CT is an assistant professor and BSW program director for the Social Work Program at Slippery Rock University of Pennsylvania. She is a Contributing Faculty in the MSW program at Walden University.

Micsky is a licensed social worker and certified thanatologist, who has been working with children, teens, and young adults for 25 years. Micsky received her BSW from Edinboro University of Pennsylvania, her MSSA from Case Western Reserve University, and a DSW from Millersville & Kutztown Universities.

Micsky is a member of the National Association of Social Workers, the Council on Social Work Education, the Association of Baccalaureate Program Directors, and the Association of Death Education and Counseling. Her research interests include self-care and wellness in social work education, grief and loss, and distance education.
