My Approach to Helping

My philosophy and approach to helping people is direct and pragmatic. What I do in therapy is work with you to understand what is happening with you now, how did you get there, and then help you change to support your goals. We work together at a pace that is comfortable for you to examine your present thoughts and feelings and challenge you to change the ones that are getting in the way of your success. With the ongoing process of therapy, the end result will be coping better, having a clearer understanding of yourself, and feeling better about whatever is going on.

More Info About My Practice

I am trained in and use a broad variety of approaches tailored to the specific client. I work with women, men, couples, and teens. I have additional training working with Type 1 Diabetics and their families, type 2 diabetics, eating disorders, and veterans. I have specific training in family and divorce mediation.

My View on the Purpose of Psychotherapy

The purpose of psychotherapy is to give emotional support and advice to those who acknowledge the need to discuss their situation with an objective third party. Psychotherapy teaches people different ways to cope. Psychotherapy helps to identify emotions. Through work in psychotherapy, people realize that changes can be made to improve self-esteem and create a sense of well-being. They know that their challenges were met, worked through and overcome, sometimes to surprising results.

What I Love about Being a Psychotherapist

My passion for practicing psychology comes from several sources. My primary work motivation comes from helping clients go from struggling to feeling more peaceful, from confusion to clarity, and from questioning their ability to overcome to overcoming. Watching people learn to cope, identify their challenges and meet those challenges head on, and give themselves permission to set goals and have dreams is a gratifying experience for me to aid in and observe. I like to teach others better ways to cope. A third reason I enjoy my profession is my ability to empathize and stretch my thinking to see situations from many points of view.
