Most therapists, counselors, and other mental health professionals engage in continuing education (CE) learning opportunities after they begin their professional career. Many states and licensing boards require mental health professionals to obtain CE credits or CEUs to stay licensed.

Professional licensing boards typically outline specific requirements for CE credits. For example, a licensing board may require a minimum number of CE credit hours per year. They may also require a certain number of live courses (ie: courses where participants can interact in real-time) versus homestudy courses (ex: video recordings, reading materials, etc.). Mental health professionals should review the requirements in their jurisdiction to determine which CE courses are accepted.

Attending CE courses also allows therapists to stay current on the trends in psychotherapy and mental health treatment so they can provide the best care possible to their clients. Online learning courses are a convenient way for many mental health professionals to access quality education resources; learn more about treatment modalities, current research, and specific behavioral health conditions; and expand their clinical skills.
