Identifying and Treating Eating Disorders and Comorbidity

Presented by SooMi Lee-Samuel, MD, MA on 04-21-2017 at 9 a.m. Pacific (noon Eastern) to 11 a.m. Pacific (2 p.m. Eastern)

Eating disorders are not among the most common psychiatric conditions to occur in the general population, but a diagnosis of anorexia nervosa is the deadliest. Every year, untold numbers of adolescents and adults die from complications directly associated with eating disorders and their comorbid conditions, including substance abuse, depression, and anxiety. Properly assessing individuals with these complex conditions can be challenging, and effective treatment strategies require a multi-disciplinary approach.

In this two-hour continuing education web conference, SooMi Lee-Samuel, MD, MA will review diagnostic criteria and best practices for determining the appropriate level of care for adults and adolescents experiencing eating disorders and comorbid conditions. As a board certified psychiatrist and the medical director of a residential treatment facility, Dr. Lee-Samuel will share how she works with her treatment team to assist individuals and their loved ones.

Dr. Lee-Samuel will discuss the epidemiology of eating disorders, the signs and symptoms of eating disorders, and comorbid conditions. Attendees will learn current, evidence-based strategies for managing and treating these conditions. A clinical case will also be presented that will illustrate some of the complex issues that surround these diagnoses and challenge clinicians.

This introductory instructional level web conference is designed to help clinicians:

  1. Demonstrate an understanding of the prevalence and risk factors for developing an eating disorder.
  2. Identify the physical signs and symptoms of eating disorders in adolescents and adults.
  3. Describe conditions that often accompany eating disorders.
  4. Explain the criteria for diagnosing eating disorders and comorbid conditions.
  5. Discuss effective treatment and management strategies for eating disorders and comorbid conditions.
