My Approach to Helping

All emotions are welcomed even if they are difficult. I use art as a primary medium of communication for you to express yourself and explore the issues or concerns that you want to bring into the session. I believe that everyone should have the opportunity for their stories to be heard, whether it is through talking or creative art-making. Everyone has his or her own lived experiences and unique worldview. I respect each individual and their stories, and these are the foundation to build a safe and trusting therapeutic relationship, in a non-judgmental space.

As an art psychotherapist, I believe that the artwork carries special meaning to its maker and it offers a window into how we feel and think. The artwork made during the session may carry deep meaning that tells your stories. I offer you a safe space to reflect and explore the meaning of these images you made so that you can have a deeper understanding of yourselves and begin to create new meaning out of your experiences.

People who experienced traumatic events, or those who feel out of touch with themselves, or feeling overwhelmed may have difficulty in finding words to describe their experiences and express their feelings. Without the pressure of finding the right word, the process of playing with art materials is a non-verbal communication that enables the feelings we pushed aside or avoided to be acknowledged. I may suggest different art materials that are suitable at times. With the art-making, I invite you to connect with your inner-self, express and explore these difficult feelings with a sense of acceptance.

You do not need to have any previous experiences or skills in art. In the session, we focus on the meanings of artwork and its process, rather than the need to create something pleasing and beautiful. I often work in a non-directive approach and strive to create an empowering space that can facilitate personal growth and healing.

More Info About My Practice

I received my MA Art Psychotherapy qualification from the United Kingdom and I am registered with The Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC). During my work in London, I worked with primary school children who experienced bereavement, anxiety, self-esteem and friendship issues using art and play. I have also carried out individual and group therapy for older adults with dementia using museum collections as a way of facilitating reminiscence.

My experiences working with various client groups at different capacities also include children and adolescents with special learning needs (e.g., children with autism and speech delay), children in marginalised communities, and refugee women.

My main approach in therapy is to work with the (Jungian approach) symbolic meanings of the images and process, as well as your relationship with them. Other theories such as attachment, object relations, and trauma will also be guiding my therapeutic understanding of my clients. I am continuously attending workshops and training as part of my professional development.
