My Approach to Helping

I would like to tell you stories of why counseling works: About the vibrant young woman who stopped by my office today to say goodbye as she heads off on an exciting new chapter in her life - who first appeared at my door, head down, tearful, lonely, and fighting depression. A teenager - once a \"cutter\" and failing school - and is now getting A\'s and B\'s in Honors Classes, preparing for college, and trying activities she never thought she was brave enough for before. Or a man, who in spite of constant stressors and family struggles, is finally finding what works for his overwhelming anxiety. I could go on and on.

People (adults, teens, couples) usually come to see me because they are trying to work out issues like improving communication in relationships; sadness; stress and anxiety; dealing with life transitions (relationship changes, careers, grief, etc), or even having difficulty making decisions. The reasons for coming into counseling are many and I believe that everyone can benefit. Nobody\'s life is exempt from challenges, and counseling simply offers a healthy avenue to take on those challenges using your own strengths, and discover insights about yourself that will give you the momentum you need for healing and change. What I provide is the healing and non-judgmental space, combined with my professional knowledge, experience, and genuine care and empathy to guide you through this process. I will approach your problems in a way that works with how you think and what you believe. To me every client is unique, so I don\'t just specialize in one type of counseling.

More Info About My Practice

I understand that deciding to get counseling AND finding the right counselor can be difficult. A lot of people feel like they should just be able to deal with it themselves. But counseling isn\'t just about telling someone your problems. There is something really amazing that happens because of the unique dynamics, that just can\'t happen when you try and process things in your own head. One of my clients has dubbed this the \"AHA! sessions.\" Not every session is an AHA session. Some can be difficult because of the emotions involved. One of my promises to you is to never push you somewhere you are not ready to go.

It is important to me that I understand your issues, know how to address them, and most importantly, that you feel comfortable with me. In order to make this a little easier, I offer the first session free. I find that it is helpful for both me and you (the potential client) to have a relaxed, and non-stressful first meeting that lasts about 30 minutes. No commitment or fee, you just come into my office, make yourself comfortable, and share with me a little about what\'s going on and what you are looking for in counseling. You can also then get a feel for me, ask me questions about how I work, and decide if I\'m the right counselor for you. Change doesn\'t happen overnight. And sometimes, it\'s not about change at all. I want you to feel that when you come to my office, there is nothing you have to do or be but yourself.

On the Fence About Going to Therapy?

If you are struggling with whether or not you want to commit to this process and come in for therapy, I offer another approach you can try from the comfort of your own home. I have taken some of the most important and fundamental pieces necessary for change and designed an online program. Basically you and I would be interacting online- this can be just through email and the program, or that and phonevideo sessions. It is not full on counseling, so it's not a good choice if you need intensive clinical treatment.
