My Approach to Helping

While we are working on your "self care" we unlock your potential by discovering what is affecting your ability to be healthier. As we do this I help you develop tools for your mind to be more supportive, so that you can be strong and healthy for the rest of your life. My goal is to help you get healthy and stay healthy so you can have fun and be connected to yourself, partner, family, friends, coworkers, and the community.

David graduated in 2007 from Appalachian State University with a master's degree in marriage and family therapy. He received a Bachelor's of Science degree in Psychology from Appalachian State University in 1997. He's a member of the North Carolina Association for Marriage and Family Therapy (NCAMFT), as well as the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy.

While in graduate school, David was the student representative for the NCAMFT board of directors. He was selected as the graduate assistant to the head of ASU's marriage and family therapy department, and remained in that role for the two-year duration of his master's program.

He has worked in the mental health field since 1997, serving a diverse population of clients from many age groups and socioeconomic backgrounds. He was the director of a homeless children's outreach program in Denver, Colorado, and has supervised residential treatment centers for high-risk teens, in addition to offering family advocacy and mental health assistance for several year before completing graduate school.

David has provided family, individual, and couples counseling since 2007. An advocate, parent, friend, coach, support person, and therapist, he is trained in the Love and Logic parenting program. He's been an instructor for this well-regarded program since 2003. He relies on this method, to much success, with his own family.

David's years of experience and training make for a highly competent therapist who is equipped to treat marriages in distress, even those on the verge of divorce or separation. He also helps his clients with issues such as domestic violence, navigating blended families, reducing the impact of divorce and separation, post-traumatic stress, self-harm, eating disorders, low self-esteem, depression, troubled teens, inappropriate sexual behavior, compulsive behavior, educational and employment challenges, and oppositional defiance.

He's skilled at helping both children and adults use play and expressive art therapy, as well as accessing community resources, aiding disabled children and their parents, treating the effects of reactive attachment disorder on parents, helping parents navigate the therapeutic process, working with the foster care system, managing challenging children, navigating the school system, and working with legal and DSS systems for both children and adults.

David has experience with substance abuse counseling, and previously worked for the Boone, North Carolina-based North Carolina Methamphetamine Initiative as a graduate intern. When he graduated, he was offered a position with the Institute. David is one of only two providers in western North Carolina to be selected by Physician Health Program to offer mental health assistance to medical professionals who are struggling to manage their own lives. His diverse array of experience equips him to help families tackle the many challenges today's world brings.

David Kadans has successfully helped children and adults overcome serious and seemingly intractable mental health conditions. His ability to aid marriages, families and individuals who feel hopeless is premised on his client's ability to follow through with treatment. He's successfully practiced in Boone and Hickory since 2009, and has successfully supported clients throughout the western Carolina community.
