Cultural Competency with Muslim Clients

Presented by Jamila Oden, MEd, LPC on 08-19-2019 at 9 a.m. Pacific (noon Eastern) to 11 a.m. Pacific (2 p.m. Eastern)

The population of Muslims in Western societies continue to grow amid a challenging global political and social climate. It is imperative to develop a better understanding of the mental health needs of this community. Muslims in the United States face unique challenges and barriers when it comes to accessing mental health care, specifically psychotherapy services.

In this 2-hour continuing education web conference, Jamila Oden, MEd, LPC returns to share a follow up to her presentation Ethical and Cultural Competence: Working with Arab and Muslim Clients.* Jamila will expand on best practices and ethical considerations for mental health and addiction professionals when working with Muslim populations. She will also take a closer look at culturally unique aspects of Ethnic Arab Muslims.

Incorporating cultural competence into treatment can improve therapeutic decision making. It can also offer alternative ways to define and plan a treatment program that is firmly directed toward progress and recovery as defined by both the counselor and the client.

This intermediate instructional level web conference is designed to help clinicians:

  1. Discuss the importance of a multi-cultural view of psychotherapy.
  2. Recognize at least three unique barriers Muslim populations face to obtain mental health services.
  3. Summarize research supported best psychotherapy practices in order to improve cultural competence with Muslim populations and decrease stigmatization.
  4. Explain the importance of values clarification as a key component of a culturally sensitive psychotherapy practice.
  5. List at least three community resources for practitioners and for clients.

Statement of program material's accuracy, utility, and risks: The contents of this program are based primarily on research publications which specifically address topics of cultural competency and ethical considerations when working with Muslim clients, and on the ethics codes of these professional organizations: APA and ACA. Contents are also guided by statements from leadership in those organizations. Up-to-date statistics were gathered from the PEW Research Center and website. Some interpretation and analysis presented is made by the presenter, in consultation with knowledgeable colleagues and expert consultants. This program discusses research supported best clinical and psychotherapy practices for use with Muslim clients. It may not include information on all applicable state laws.
