Creating an Intentionally Inclusive Therapy Practice

Presented by Lisa Vallejos, PhD, LPC on 01-19-2018 at 9 a.m. Pacific (12 p.m. Eastern) to 11 a.m. Pacific (2 p.m. Eastern)

Current research from the National Alliance on Mental Illness indicates minorities have less access to mental healthcare and the quality of the care available is poor. Many practitioners recognize these disparities and seek to bridge that gap in service, but they may not have a clear vision for making lasting change in their own private practice. One solution for addressing these issues and improving mental health services in multicultural communities is for clinicians to create intentionally inclusive practices.

In this two-hour continuing education web conference, Dr. Lisa Vallejos will describe how intentionally inclusive practices are led by therapists who recognize and work with their own bias and privilege while creating safe spaces for minorities to access quality care. Dr. Vallejos will help attendees examine their personal thoughts and feelings around racial issues and identify where their private practice or agency may lack of inclusiveness.

Dr. Vallejos will explain how attendees can recreate their practice into one that is intentionally inclusive, diverse, and prepared to serve all individuals seeking therapy. In addition to learning how to self-examine for hidden bias, attendees will also learn skills for managing difficult feelings when discussing racial justice. Dr. Vallejos will also share ideas for therapists to consciously create culturally inclusive offers and programs as well as how to develop a socially conscious pricing structure.

This intermediate instructional level web conference is designed to help clinicians:

  1. Identify and correct the lack of inclusiveness in one's agency or private practice.
  2. Apply dialogue-opening strategies to create intentionally inclusive practices.
  3. Describe the barriers to care that minorities experience.
  4. Design therapeutic programs and offerings that are mindful of the minority experience.
  5. Identify personal biases and ways to manage difficult feelings when engaging in discussions around racial justice.
