My Approach to Helping
My name is Yi Qin and I am a certified counsellor and psychotherapist with experience providing psychological services for young adults, middle-aged and senior-aged clients in both Australia and Singapore. I have worked in numerous industries, including sports, aerospace engineering, design and have found my calling in being a therapist.
I believe in every client's potential for growth and together, we will work collaboratively to reach your goals. My approach is integrative and holistic and my work draws from many modalities such as psychodynamic, Gestalt, emotion-focused, mindfulness-based, and cognitive behavioral therapies. Most importantly, it is deeply experiential and simply cannot be replicated outside of therapy. Through the experience, you can expect to improve the way you feel, build more meaningful connections with others and learn to take control over your life.
More Info About My Practice
Holistic Counselling, or holistic therapy, is a practice that I use, which uses a whole-person perspective when I work with my clients. Instead of using a clinical approach, which identifies and labels the client based on their symptoms, I help my clients by looking at the full picture of their past and present, strengths they can leverage on, and grow as a person. I use various methods to achieve this based on your preferences and needs, including the mind-body connection, spirituality and cognitive (thought-based) approaches. Ultimately, you will come to understand yourself better through increased awareness as you begin the journey of introspection and working through difficult emotions.
How My Own Struggles Made Me a Better Therapist
My humanistic approach to working with clients comes from personal experience as someone who was on the other side of the chair as client. Growing up with depression since my teens, I did not understand the impact that childhood trauma played on my life until I learned about it in my course. After seeing two clinical psychologists, who were not attuned to my needs, I finally found the space that I needed from a counsellor and have healed tremendously from my old emotional wounds. As such, I can understand and empathise with the hesitancy and fear of seeking help, but is also heartened by the courage that clients have by showing up and prioritising their own emotional well-being. Most importantly, this experience has taught me that the past doesn't have to determine your future, and we can work collaboratively to get the outcomes you want.
