Borderline Personality Disorder and Complex Comorbidity

Presented by Melissa O'Neill, LCSW on 05-24-2019 at 9 a.m. Pacific (noon Eastern) to 11 a.m. Pacific (2 p.m. Eastern)

Complex comorbidity is a hallmark feature of adult Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD). BPD often presents in a mood disorder and a disorder of impulsivity such as eating disorders and substance use disorders. For instance, about 78% of adults with BPD develop a substance-related disorder or addiction at some time in their lives.(1)

In this 2-hour continuing education web conference, Melissa O’Neill, LCSW will explore clinicians’ biases toward diagnosing and treating Borderline Personality Disorder. She will also discuss how those biases can affect outcomes through experiential exercises and case studies.

This web conference will explore evidence-based practices to treat co-occurring BPD and substance use disorders or eating disorders. This includes strategies to help clients manage the impulsivity and emotional dysregulation that is significantly greater within this population.

This introductory instructional level web conference is designed to help clinicians:

  1. Recognize the relationship between BPD and co-occurring substance use disorders or eating disorders.
  2. Observe any personal biases toward BPD clients and how that may influence course and outcomes in treatment.
  3. Apply strategies to manage impulsivity in this client population during treatment.
  4. Utilize mindfulness and thought diffusion to increase insight in this population.
  5. Utilize elements of Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) for co-occurring disorders.

Statement of program material's accuracy, utility, and risks: None.
Declaration of conflicts of interest and commercial support: None.
