On Becoming a Better Therapist: Skills to Be the Best You Can Be

Presented by Barry Duncan, PsyD on 11-02-2012 at 9 a.m. Pacific to 10:30 a.m. Pacific (1:30 p.m. Eastern)

Despite overall effectiveness of therapy, dropouts are a problem, many people do not benefit, and therapists significantly vary in effectiveness. In addition, many therapists do not know how effective or not they really are. Nine randomized clinical trials demonstrated that person-based outcome feedback offers a viable solution to these problems by identifying at-risk individuals before they drop out or realize a negative outcome while simultaneously raising the bar of therapist performance. In short, feedback increases positive outcomes.

This presentation provides a no-nonsense discussion of the skills required to get started using feedback to help individuals help you do good work--not sometime next month or even next week, but with the next person you treat. One of the tools you will learn is to replicate a feedback system that will easily give you the ability to see early warning signs of potential problems. This will allow you to identify how to enhance your therapeutic impact with those in therapy. Through the feedback that is attained, you will learn ways to have a healthier conversation that will deepen the collaborative understanding. This will intensify the individual’s resources to bring about greater change. You will also learn how you can use outcome data to improve your outcomes over the course of your career.

This Web Conference is designed to help clinicians:

  1. Identify the problems that plague psychotherapy outcomes: dropouts, non-response, and therapist variability;
  2. Ultilize a research validated early warning system to improve effectiveness by early identification of those who are not responding to treatment;
  3. Explain methods and skills to elicit feedback about outcome to enable either new directions in therapy or to facilitate referral to another provider;
  4. Describe methods and skills to elicit feedback about the alliance to prevent dropout and enhance engagement.
