Applying DBT for Client Wellness and Recovery

Presented by Andrew Bein, PhD, LCSW on 07-18-2014 at 9 a.m. Pacific to 11 a.m. Pacific (2 p.m. Eastern)

Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) offers highly effective strategies and skills for those with emotion regulation challenges. As clinicians, when we attempt to apply these technologies, we often struggle to cobble together exercises and approaches that connect with the realities of our clients and service settings.

This web conference presents a dynamic, evidence-supported, DBT-informed approach that fits the realities of our clientele and fulfills the need to incorporate recovery-oriented principles. Participants will understand and learn how to utilize "Wise Mind" as a central, memorable concept that guides efforts in moment-to-moment emotion regulation and resilience, incorporating DBT skill areas. At the end of the web conference, participants will understand how to implement "IMPROVE the moment" strategies, mindfulness interventions, and other powerful DBT approaches with trans-diagnostic individuals.

This web conference is intermediate instructional level and designed to help clinicians:

  1. Identify DBT applications that fit the realities of our clientele and connect with mental health and substance abuse recovery goals;
  2. Utilize "Wise Mind" as a central, memorable concept guiding trans-diagnostic individuals in moment-to-moment emotion regulation and resilience;
  3. Select specific in-session exercises that work with diverse populations;
  4. Discuss how basic neuroscience explanations build motivation for DBT clients.

Accuracy and Limitations

Dialectical Behavior Therapy is an evidence-based approach. The DBT applications introduced here are considered DBT-informed in that they maintain the essence of DBT; however, they are adaptations. Though supportive evidence for the approach and exercises discussed in this presentation have been outlined in Bein's latest book, specific, continued research needs to be conducted.
