Adlerian Psychology Counseling Techniques

Presented by Jon Sperry, PhD, LMHC, LCSW, NCC on 12-04-2020 at 9 a.m. Pacific (noon Eastern) to 11 a.m. Pacific (2 p.m. Eastern)

Adlerian Counseling is well suited for clinical practice today because its theory and practice is compatible with a wide range of contemporary approaches. These approaches include the cognitive-behavioral, interpersonally oriented dynamic, systemic, humanistic, and experiential approaches. It is noteworthy that many of the basic principles of Adlerian Counseling have influenced and predated some of the most commonly utilized counseling approaches that are used today.

The Adlerian perspective is optimistic and focuses on assets, strengths, and health rather than on liabilities, deficits, and pathology. In this 2-hour continuing education webinar, Dr. Jon Sperry will focus on the utilization of Adlerian Counseling strategies with adolescents and adults. Dr. Sperry will provide an overview of the theory and the practice of Adlerian counseling and will also review the four phases of Adlerian Counseling.

In addition, Dr. Sperry will teach and demonstrate Adlerian Counseling techniques (such as acting as-if, push button technique, constructive action, early recollections and lifestyle assessment), provide case examples, and lead participants in various experiential activities to learn the theory and practice of Adlerian Counseling.

This introductory instructional level web conference is designed to help clinicians:

  1. Describe the core theoretical principles of Adlerian theory and practice.
  2. List the four phases of Adlerian counseling.
  3. Describe Adlerian conceptualization and how it informs intervention planning.
  4. Summarize and discuss the lifestyle assessment process as a core assessment and treatment intervention from this theoretical orientation.
  5. Explain at least two Adlerian counseling techniques, such as acting as-if, push button technique, constructive action, early recollections and lifestyle assessment.

Statement of program material's accuracy, utility, and risks: The contents of this program are based primarily on research done over the past 30 years by which Adlerian counseling strategies have been used and validated among individuals, couples, families, groups, and students. Course references will be provided to participants.

Declaration identifying any potential conflict of interest and/or commercial support: None.
